Self-cleaning litter boxes employ technology that automates the litter box emptying procedure. Some models have electric combing mechanisms that automatically scoop the clumps out of the litter box into a sealed, disposable-bag-lined container after the animal has used it. These models use a pressure pad or an infrared light to determine when the cat has left the box and will comb the box after so many minutes have passed, to avoid disturbing the cat. Other designs take this further, and connect directly to a home's plumbing (faucet connection and drain) so they can wash, rinse and dry the permanent litter pellets automatically. Simpler designs exist, for example, some require the owner to manually shake the clumps into an easy-to-remove tray. Another variant has an enclosed sphere which rotates as it sifts out the clumps and deposits them in a drawer below the sphere. A new method involves incorporating sifting functionality within a sifting litter liner.

Litter box Liners Pros and Cons, Convenient or Problematic?
I dont think disciplining a cat for its natural behaviour is going to help. We both scratch the bottom of our litter tray, and yes it does make it difficult to clean, but this would be what we'd do in the wild. Be gentle and kind with kitty, and if you want a bigger tray, seedling trays (no holes in the bottom) from a garden centre or hardware store are a good alternative (we use one when our trays are getting cleaned and dried). They tend to be bigger and we haven't managed to scratch it too much.
You could also buy some nail clippers and trim the claws. Al has this done and he doesn't mind, but I dont like it at all and wriggle a lot. He cant claw much with the claws afterwards, its just like a manicure for cats, you just take the sharp ends off (there is a guide to trimming claws on the Cat Manual).
Hope this all helps.

If you had a sense of smell as sensitive as a cat, would you want to toilet in a tiny enclosed box? And risk another cat pouncing on you when there’s only one exit? Particularly if you have more than one cat, your cat must feel like they can escape easily when toileting, as this is a time when they feel very vulnerable. It only takes one occasion of feeling unsafe for your cat to be put off from using the tray entirely.
